Said to originally be a stop along a Native American trail in the 1820's, Lawrence is now an Indianapolis suburb in northeast Marion County.

The original settlement was first called Lanesville in 1849. Other names came and went (no - Dogpatch was not one of them) and in 1866 the name Lawrence was selected, honoring the Naval hero of the War of 1812, Captain James Lawrence, who is best remembered for the command, "Don't give up the ship!"

With a population of 600, Lawrence became a town in 1929. Following World War II, the population rose dramatically with Indianapolis' suburban boom. Between 1940 and 1960, the town's population increased tenfold. That's ten times bigger for those of us slower in math.

One of the keys to that growth was Fort Benjamin Harrison, the U.S. Department of Defense's financial center, at one time the city of Indianapolis' largest employer. But the end of the Cold War forced the Fort's closing. Since then, foresight and a strong public-private partnership has allowed a redevelopment of the base into private housing, retail and a beautiful state park and golf course. Fort Harrison State Park is one of the state's largest and more scenic parks, drawing visitors from all over the state. It also offers a championship golf course designed by the legendary Pete Dye. The redevelopment is a model for base closure activities throughout the Department of Defense.

A new Lawrence Government Center sits opposite the park entrance and marks the first city center the community has ever had. Hopes run high that the development and revitalization of the City of Lawrence will continue with the same energy and success that have marked the achievements of recent years.

Lawrence is also home to a number of fun events for residents and visitors, featuring many of the best things about small town festivals and fairs. The Lawrence 4th Fest is a celebration complete with fireworks, a parade, and carnival games. Lawrence Community Day fills Lawrence Community Park with a rock wall, food vendors from Lawrence restaurants, a dunk tank, and special guest appearances; and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce's Health, Wellness, and Fitness Fair promotes Lawrence health, both fiscal and physical.
