In late 1818, a settler named John Rogers built a home near the falls on Fall Creek, near today's town of Pendleton. As time passed, more people made their way to the region, always settling near the falls - the community source of water and later, power.
Around 1823, Madison County was officially recognized by Indiana, and a modest cabin in Pendleton near the falls was the government center. In 1825, Thomas
Pendleton moved to the area and soon laid out a town around the cabin and gave it his name. (Advice: don't give away your name - you'll have no way to be identified.) Pendleton was the county seat until it relocated to Andersontown (now Anderson) in 1826.
Something to note: In 1843, noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke in Pendleton. It's suggested that his life was in danger from would-be assassins. Through the compassion and bravery of members of the town, he escaped safely.
Through the 20th century Pendleton continued to grow, all the while remaining committed to responsible planning, including setting aside 150 acres in town as Falls Park. Why would a small town save that much land for the public? Well, they say the falls on Fall Creek are a part of Pendleton's heritage; the focal point of local life. The falls are at the heart of an expansive park that features nature trails, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, meeting facilities, a historical museum, and more.
Pendleton is a small town with some very big ideas on how to enthusiastically welcome both residents and businesses. We're guessing big hugs and smooches - that's enthusiasm! Even if it's only a hearty handshake, there's rich history and a sense that the town's best days are yet to come.

Pendleton is home to three facilities in the Indiana Department of Corrections (town motto: "No Hitchikers, pleeeeeeeease")
In 1824, a peaceful group of Seneca and Miami Indians were massacred by white settlers. Now called the Fall Creek Massacre, three men were convicted of and hanged for the murders, setting an important precedent in recognizing the Native Americans' civil rights. It was the first time white men were executed for the murder of Native Americans in the United States.
The Pendleton Historic District is a U.S. Registered Historic District. It's nice to be noticed.
