Greensburg claims to be focused on family values. What say we all move there and have them show us?!
In Decatur County (named for naval hero Commodore Stephen Decatur), a county court and local government was established in the area in 1822 and the new town was named Greensburg. Must've been a rousing place since the first building was a jail. It's calmed down since. The city is about midway between Indianapolis and Cincinnati off I-74.
Ever hear of the Greensburg Indiana courthouse tree? The story is that in the 1870s, a small sprig grew on the northwest corner of the Courthouse tower, followed by more sprouts. About a decade later, the fast-acting folks of Greensburg removed all but two of the shrubs growing on the tower. One survived, as did another that grew on the southwest corner. These two trees created the county's legacy as the home to the Courthouse tree.
Greensburg us also home to one of Andrew Carnegie's gifted public libraries, opened in 1905 on the site of the old Watson Foundry. Today the old library is home to the city government. It retains its original rotunda ceiling with portraits of Homer, Raphael, Noah Webster, William Cullen Bryant, Shakespeare, Von Schiller, Longfellow and Beethoven.
Now with more than 10,000 population, Greensburg manufactures or assembles flour, carriages, lumber, iron castings, auto accessories, caskets, hardware, brooms, wire and shirts (Shirts? Isn't that China's job?).
